Wednesday Tech Tips: Back to School

Happy first week back!  It is always so exciting to see both new and familiar faces in the Teen Room.  I hope you are all having a good time settling in and starting a new year.

We have had a change in our computer sign-up procedure in the Teen Room.  This happened late in the last school year, so you may be encountering it for the first time this fall.  You need the exact same information to sign in as you always have: your library card number and PIN (personal identification number a.k.a. password).  The difference is you now sign up using a laptop at the librarians' desk and that laptop will assign you to a computer in the room.

There is a reason for this new system and it is a good one!  You will now be able to sign up for unlimited hour-long computer sessions while the Teen Room is open! 

Remember before when you only got ONE HOUR in the Teen Room?  Okay, now you get AS MANY AS YOU WANT.*  But for that to work we had to route it through this sign-up system.  Thems the breaks, kids.

In other WTT news, the library is offering free beginner's computer classes starting TONIGHT from 6:00-8:00PM at the Main Library.  Classes are first come, first served and they are very popular so hustle on over if you are interested!




*This does mean you can no longer use inadequate computer time as an excuse for not finishing your assignments, y'all...

Vans is holding a national shoe customization contest that will award $50,000 to a high school art program.  'Cause when money gets tight, art classes are early up on the chopping block and it's a dang shame.

You will need a teacher to register for the contest so hurry! time is running out and only the first 1,000 schools to register will be eligible.

Shakespeare made easier

Not that I'm saying you shouldn't still read the play, but if you're feeling a little lost and getting all the characters jumbled up, these shorts from CliffNotes might help.

It's a fun study break too; I just enjoyed Hamlet*.



*And that's not even one of my favorite plays!  Hamlet is a tool, and if I'm going to watch someone ruin the lives of everyone around him, I prefer Richard II.

Snow Day for schools, library OPEN

City of Cambridge Scholarship Apps

Listen up, college-bound! The city is offering scholarships, AKA money, cash, moolah, cheddar, benjamins, to eligible high school seniors and other pursuing higher education.

To be eligible, applicants must be attending or have received acceptance to attend an educational institution beyond the high school level prior to the time for payment of the scholarship award.

You can find applications at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Avenue. There's also a bad link; I will post an update as soon as I find out what's going on with that.

Sorry kids. Oh back-to-school time! Makes me want to run out and buy new shoes and a whole lot of unbroken pencils. Actually, that's every day, but maybe I'll throw a lunchbox in there.
