  • The Museum of Fine Arts is seeking teens for the 2013 summer Teen Arts Council (TAC).  Members work on a variety of museum activities and attend workshops and training sessions to develop creative and critical thinking skills.  And they get paid!  Contact 617-369-4359 or tac@mfa.org.

Submit your short story to One Teen Story

One Teen Story is a new online literary magazine which debuts in September 2012.  Each issue will feature a story about the teen experience and it could be written by you.



The magazine is holding a teen fiction contest which will be judged by Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay and Where She Went.  You must be between the ages of 14 and 19 to enter.  Winners receive fame, glory, publication, and $500!

The deadline is May 31, 2012 so start writing!

Prove It, Smartypants

TOMORROW is the Teen Room's second annual SAT Vocabulary (and Grammar) Quizbowl Smackdown. Taking the SATs this weekend? Need to break from studying? Come study in a... different way. Even in you're not sitting for the test come up the ante by showing off your smarts. It's at 3:30pm, there will be candy, prizes, and hopefully enough room for your ENORMOUS BRAINS.

Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest

This contest is sponsored by Hollins University and awards prizes for the best poems submitted by girls who are sophomores or juniors in high school.

First place (one winner): $200, plus free registration, transportation to, and housing for the Lex Allen Literary Festival at Hollins University on March 10, 2012.

Second place (six winners): $25 and publication in Cargoes.  Two copies of Cargoes.

Requirements
  • Students must be sophomores or juniors in high school
  • Poems must be submitted online
  • Students must have a faculty sponsor
  • Each student may submit no more than two poems (Microsoft Word or text document only)
  • Addtional pages must be labelled with the author's name, the title of the poem, and a page number.

Each entry must include:
  • Author's name
  • Author's mailing address
  • Author's phone number and or email address
  • Author's school
  • Address of author's school
  • Phone number of author's school


The deadline for this contest is Tuesday, November 15, 2011.

Essay contest for high school seniors

The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) invites high school seniors in Cambridge who are entering college to participate in our High School Senior Essay Challenge.  The winner and runner up of this competition will be awarded a brand new laptop computer, courtesy of Micro Center, to assist them in their academic journey. The purpose of this contest is for students to examine the community in which they live and analyze how it relates to public safety.
The essay should demonstrate the writer’s understanding and appreciation for the importance of community partnerships and how each individual plays a role in strengthening their community. For information on requirements and eligibility, click here. Entry packets are available at all Cambridge neighborhood youth centers. The contest deadline is June 1, 2011.

Awards & Prizes Roundup

Attention poets and friends of young heroes!

The New England Poetry Club is sponsoring three contests for young poets. The deadline for all three is April 30, 2011. For more information, contact contests@nepoetryclub.org.

Submit poems in duplicate with school name, grade, address, email address and contest name.

The John Holmes Award: for a poem by a student enrolled in a New England college. Prize $100.
Send to 2 Farrar Street, Cambridge MA 02138.

Ruth Berrien Fox Award: for a poem by a Massachusetts high school student. Prize $100.
Send to 2 Farrar Street, Cambridge MA 02138.

Longfellow Prize: for poems by Massachusetts students in elementary and middle schools. Prize $100. Funded by Friends of Longfellow House Frank Buda Memorial Fund.
Send to Longfellow National Historic Site, 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge MA 02138.

But wait, there's more!

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, founded by young adult author T.A. Barron, invites nominations for its 2011 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people ages 8 to 18 who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet.

Each year, ten national winners each receive $2,500 to support their service work or higher education. Annual nomination deadline is April 30.

Teen Night at the ICA


Tomorrow night is Teen Night at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston! Um, it's looks AWESOME. You should definitely go. Events start at 6 pm with prizes, dance performances (Jam'nastics and Floorlords), a step battle (Boston Latin Step Squad vs Dynasty), spoken word (Poetic Justice, P.J. Phinney, Danny DeLeon) and much much more. AND it's only for high school students. No adults. No kids. For more information, go here.
