July is STILL Anti-Boredom Month!

Here are some ideas...

  • Write a letter (and mail it also).  You will make someone very happy!
Image: Dhiren Gala, 2012.

  • Cut your hair.  Yes, you will initially feel trepidation, but once you get going it is quite exhilarating!

  • Make popsicles.  If you don't have popsicle molds, use ice cube trays, muffin tins, or paper cups!
  • Learn to say "hello" in another language.  You may also wish to learn how to say "help!"
  • Wait for someone to water their yard, and then dive through their sprinkler.
  • Give your old Barbie a makeover.

  • Museums all over Massachusetts are participating in Free Fun Fridays -- find one near you!

  • Finally, make your own souvenir t-shirt to commemorate it all!

Got more ideas of how to beat boredom to a pulp?  Share them with us in the comments!

    RELAX

The school year is in full swing. All over the Teen Room you'll see kids buckling down, sharpening their pencils, and getting to work. Homework, college applications, extracurriculars, extra credit. We're so proud of you guys!

    But don't forget to relax.

Everyone relaxes in their own way. Some people like to read a good, quick book. Maybe a short poem while you eat your breakfast? Some people swear by yoga. Others by knitting. Some people might like to lay back with their fattest pair of headphones and listen to some good old fashioned classical music.

Whatever you're into, the Teen Room can help you out. Books, DVDs, CDs... we can track them down for you. I also offer a few of my favorite zone-out-and-stare videos from youtube. Watching these videos is worth hours of yoga, I'm telling you.

    How do YOU relax?

Cambridge Office for Tourism Community Events calendar
There is so much going on in your city, guys!  For instance, did you know that there's a free cocktail & snacks event every Thursday in June at the Hyatt Regency?  I DID NOT KNOW, and I pride myself on knowing where the snacks are.

    Cambridge Discovery Days
We've even got ye olde historical Cambridge covered.  Includes a link to the library's own amazing Archives and Special Collections.  Just think, someday there may be noteworthy and archival about you!

    Movie tomorrow afternoon

Wow.  I am still so impressed by that yo-yo guy.  Wait, what?

Oh, you're here!  and you want to know about the movie tomorrow?

It will be funny.  There will be romance and adventure, and a 70% chance of dancing.  If there is no dancing, then I will dance, how about that?

    Obligatory popcorn will be served.

    Today: Hootenanny

"...[A] gathering is brie, mellow song stylings; shindig, dip, less mellow song stylings, perhaps a large amount of malt beverage; and hootenanny, well, it's chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny." Oz, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 3

DJ Kitty gets loud in the library.

But it will be none of those things unless you come!  So join us for food, games, beverages of the carbonated-but-not-malty variety, hoot and nanny.

where i come from there IS no SAT...

    No, but for real.

I never had to take the SAT. We all took the ACT. Because colleges where I'm from don't care about the SAT, I guess? Unless that's just what my guidance counselor told me because he thought I couldn't handle higher education. In which case: IN YOUR FACE DR. GULSHINKI! I am a LIBRARY SCIENTIST now!)

Anyway. This is Massachusetts. College-bound juniors have to sit for this test, and they have to sit soon. Juniors? Are you reading this? Instead of doing math portion practice tests? Are you signed up for May 7? Or June 4? Am I stressing you out?

DON'T BE STRESSED! Come by the library next Tuesday (April 26) after school for a fun-but-still-helpful SAT VOCABULARY SMACKDOWN! There will be competition, there will be candy, there will be one left standing - and that one will have the most magnificent vocabulary in all the land and will get a real-life PRIZE. Most of all it will be a welcomed break from crammy cram cramming.

    You in? You're in.
