Long Weekend Reading Review: Quick and Dirty
Over the long weekend (librarians only had a long WEEKEND, guys, not a whole week off) I did some of the reading I was planning on doing leading up to Valentines Day, which I neglected to do because I got really into this book about cowboys and Charles Manson (yikes).
On the quick:
Maya already wrote about this one, and I don't have much to add. It was as good as she said it would be. Scary, but not the kind of scary you're expecting from a book about ghosts and serial killers. Sad, too, and beautiful.
You may remember that I was REALLY excited about this one. It ended up being less scary and more swoony (it has a FLOWING DRESS on the cover, so I don't know why I was surprised). Luckily I don't shy away from swoon.
I started reading this a million years ago, and just picked it up again this weekend. Lemme tell you something about the couple in this book: they are more mature at 17 than I am now. For real.
This is a sequel, and I didn't read the first one, but I loved it anyway. And everyone one the cover has super cute shoes.
What about you guys? Reading anything good over school vacation?

Super Great. Extra Gatsby.
Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet came out when I was a senior in high school and let me tell you, it was an event. We had just finished reading Shakespeare's play in English class, and our whole class went to the movie together. (Our teacher refused to come along). We all bought the soundtrack. It was the first time a piece of literature we had to read for class had been made into a movie that didn't seem like the first movie ever made. Honestly, my heart beats fast thinking about it. All those bright colors and lavish sets and ungovernable passions. Dude's movies get mixed reviews, but that film, at that time, with that cast, in those colors left an impression on me. It left an impression on all of us.
AND YOU GUYS, it could happen to you. Lots of people will probably go to see Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby this spring. Some will love it, some will hate it. But YOU folks, YOU are the ones who will get to experience a Baz Luhrmann treatment of a book you may be slogging through in English class. YOU will get to see the story (which, full disclosure, is one of my favorite stories of all time) (I'm sure you couldn't tell by the breathless nature of this post) you are reading, not by choice, on a giant screen, in a giant way. It's kind of special.
Anyway, the movie doesn't come out until May, and we've already posted the trailer, but take a look at these character posters they've released. I love the way they all have a quote from the book attached to them.
Sometimes you just need to get excited.

Great Moments in Graduation History (pt. 1)

The View from the Top by Hillary Frank
In the months leading up to high school graduation there are about a million things you could choose to focus on. How awesome your post-graduation life is going to be. How terrifying your post-graduation life is going to be. All the people you never have to deal with again. How broken your heart is going to be because of all the people you aren't going to see everyday anymore. It seems like everything is about planning all the sudden, but what about right now? The View from the Top is about a group of seniors and the pressure they're feeling to define their friendships, to declare their love, and to figure out who they are -- all before graduation day.
(Stay tuned for more books, movies, shows and songs about graduation, and leave your own suggestions in the comments!)
